Call me naive but, when a band is inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, I have the tendency to think the whole band is inducted? How can they cast out a member? Nirvana is among the 2014 inductees and Chad Channing, who was the drummer before Dave Grohl joined the band, received this message from the Hall of Fame organizers, according to Radio.com: ‘Can you tell whoever looks after Chad Channing that he isn’t being inducted … It is just Dave, Krist and Kurt’ Ouch! And stupid! Kurt is dead anyway, so it’s only 2 people on stage,.. why are they doing this?
Channing was the drummer on Nirvana’s 1989 and debut album ‘Bleach’, he was on the band’s first 2 singles, ‘Love Buzz’ and ‘Sliver’, as well as on various compilation, live albums and he even played on ‘Polly’ off the album ‘Nevermind’. Nirvana manager Michael Meisel and Krist Novoselic did lobby for him to be inducted with the rest of the band, but they were unsuccessful.
Let’s see, the rock & roll hall of fame has also explained why only four members of Kiss would be inducted this year too: Founders Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley would like to include subsequent members of the group, but the Hall of Fame has limited the award to Kiss’s original lineup… and they do the exact opposite for Nirvana? What’s going on in this logic? What are the rules? According to Pitchfork, to qualify for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, there must be a passing of 25 years since the band’s first release: since ‘Love Buzz’ was recorded in 1988, Channing should logically be inducted, and not Grohl who joined the band in 1990!
This is very disappointing for Channing who seemed to be very enthusiastic before he received the message: ‘When I told my daughter about the induction, she was super excited for me! So much of my excitement about it is for her! She’s pretty awesome! My little boy’s too young to understand though. So yeah, it does feel pretty good!’ he said to Radio.com. If they had any decency, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic should boycott that jokey ceremony.
