On Wednesday, movie Director Cameron Crowe dropped a new Pearl Jam unreleased demo called ‘Chinese’ on the Pearl Jam Sirius/XM radio. The song was aired for the first time and Crowe said that it was a composition by guitarist Stone Gossard and that a little bit of it can be heard in his documentary PJ20.
I am far from being a PJ expert, but the beginning, in particular, sounds typical Pearl Jam, close of what they have been doing forever. Eddie Vedder’s hardly audible vocals, or rather moaning, seem lost in this spacey and trippy instrumental jam. It’s mellow-haunting in a detached way, but still emotional enough, especially because of the vocals at the end which seem to repeat ‘alive’. I suppose it is a big deal for Pearl Jam’s fans, even though it is only a demo
And even if we did not know it was from 1991, it would be easy to guess it.
