The Fox Theater in Oakland CA got the first stop of New Order’s autumn tour. Banging out 16 songs and an undisclosed encore the band jumped around all of their 8 albums.
Formed in 1980 these surviving Joy Division members carried on after the death of Ian Curtis. Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris are all that’s left of this particular Joy Division. Peter Hook hit the road going solo and has nothing to do with this reunion. So basically its really 2/3 Joy Division or 50% New Order. Gillian Gilbert is on keyboards and with Phil Cunningham and Tom Chapman. Stated simply how much of a nostalgia act can you be when so many of the members are gone?
He who has the vocals wins. Music can be written down and performed by anyone with the skill of instrument but to replicate vocals is virtually impossible- you nearly will sound like a cover band, unless of course you’re that guy who took over Stephen Perrys gig in Journey, that guy totally sounds the same.
So Bernard has the pipes and that guarantees a great show. Oh and the review from Oakland was outstanding. Rocknyc will be at the Roseland show on 10/19, the band will be there on 10/21 as well. Question is what’s up with the Joy Division backdrop!?
