New Music Week of June 13th, 2011: Fame At Last

So Much More – Big Sean – Detroit transplant drops the best hip since "Golden" and like Golden it deals with success, something the Kanye protegee will soon know more about. Like Tyler, he ain't exactly at ease with fame, he calls out teachers and family for not supporting him till after the fact. Unlike Tyler, he wears it with ease, "They want to see me dead but I gave them dedication" B.I.G. explains. TRACK OF THE WEEK.

Stand – Lenny Kravitz – Self help as bottom feeder rock. Unlistenable.

Suicide – Paul McCartney – You know it as a snippet off the first album, here it is again on the remastered version of the album and the full length version is still unfinished, it has no direction, it is as though there are four songs bucking for position. Obvious why he didn't release it till now. Also obvious that he is a complete master of melody.

Dance Without You – Skylar Gray – the writer of "Love The Way You Lie" in similar downbeat mode. But not as good.

Life Is Like That – Jay Sean – The most public face of Limey hip hop values till Tinie showed up. Jay hit before, and this is pretty good standard issue r&b.

Only The Rugged Survive – Yeah it sounds like RZA. Just not 1st rank RZA.

See No More – Joe Jonas – I know Justin Timberlake, I like Justin Timberlake and you, Sir, are no Justin Timberlake. This is pretty depressing stuff.

My Life As Rob Gordon – The Wonder Years –  Really good emo indie rock.

Deer In The Headlights – Owl City – Couldn't stand the hit, thought he sucked live, but gosh, despite his annoying voice, this is a very catchy pop-rocker.

The Legacy – Black Veil Brides – These guys are stuck somewhere between post-hardcore, tweenscreamo and metal. They may well be a danger, but they aren't one here.

A Freak Like Me Needs Company – Patrick Page – Rumor has it U2 have dumped their REDONE studio session. I can understand why if this is what they considered modern dance. This is a mammoth misfire. If they had the ability, Bono and the Edge should've have written an OLD FASHIONED showstopper, A mutated Lady Gaga twitcher was the last thing needed. Lyrically, it might, more or less, do the job. But if it expresses some sort of rationale for Green Goblin, musically it is just the latest dud in a long, long list.
