Not much of interest this week -it is as if the world slowed to a trickle of sound!!! So I am gonna go with a coupla songs I missed last week, and some I bought almost randoly, and a coupla new ones.
Dollhouse – Priscilla Renea
Youtube phenom and MTV star releases her first album and it is kinda annoying in a pop and sway (plus what kinda lyrics is this: “I aint a doll, this ain’t a dollhouse….”). Plus, the production is like some kinda extended sugar rush.
Going Away – Meg and Dia
Myspace phenoms Meg and Dia are sisters who went from acoustic duo to five piece rock band and sound just like Priscilla.
If We Ever Meet Again (featuring Katy Perry) – Timbaland
I like Katy a lot but how much is that? This is a nice pop confection by a producer who has truly tremendous taste and this, not unlike the other two songs above, is overproduced ickie poppy.
Number One (featuring Keri Hilson) – R. Kelly
Good ole Dan Aquilante, the minute Dan gave Untitled a half hearted review I knew it’d be a keeper. And while “Number One” is no “Echo” it is seriously good R&B with the here there and everywhere Keri Hilson a pretty sexy counterpart.
How Low – Ludacris
This has the best sample of the week and the song reminds oddly enough of early Public Enemy. Not bad. Not great.
It Never Rains In California – Albert Hammond and M. Hazelwood
Woke up to news about flooding in Southern california and I couldn’t get Strokes Daddy’s song outta my head. “Don’t tell them how you found me, give me a break…” Lovely, sad, one hit wonder.
Ne Me Quitte Pas – Jacquel Brel
“if you go away, if you go away…. BUT IF YOU STAY…” Wow, they don’t make powerballads like this any more.
Work – Ciara (featuring Missy Elliott)
Off Ciara’s 2009 Fantasy Ride and it is so good to hear Missy Elliot again. Elliot has had something of a quiet decade, next month’s will be Missy’s first album since 2005’s The Cookbook. Any lesser performer might have discovered her career over with that long a break. “Work” has Ciara’s name on it but it feels like an Elliot rhyhm all the way thru. Single Of the Week.
