Of all the things Kurt Cobain was great at, this dead voice of a sad generation was best at writing songs.
That is Nirvana's secret, it is its only secret, everything else is self-evident. Nevermind, which will have its 20th anniversary next year, is the voice of a generation whose generationalness didn't really matter. There is no uniformal youthness to the 90s…. there wasn't much of a one to the 80s either. But the 90's were formed in the molted irons of irony, despondancy, and cool. And Cobain personfied it so much that "Smellls Like Teen Spirit" sounds like cliche today. Even the music is absorbed into modern rocks DNA.
There will be a 4 CD plus DVD special box set to commeorate the anniversary and I have no problem listening to the album one more time (plus added bonus and rarities, etcetra) though personally, I prefer In Utero (especially the original demos) and MTV Unplugged.
Can't wait to find out what the track list is.
