Natural Child at the Echo on Tuesday March 22nd, 2011

Opening at the Echo on Tuesday night was a Nashville trio going under the moniker of Natural Child, with two frontboys that had decided to play their we-are-white-trash-and-proud-of-it characters with humor and bad taste funny jokes.

They took the stage and rose the energy bar very high from start to finish, with their old school rock’ n’ roll, injected by a sort of Southern twist. They were chatting a lot between songs, announcing each time what each one was about,.. about drugs, about smoking crack with friends, or about being forced to sleep with someone, or… about white people.

One of them was wearing a truck hat à la Wavves’ Nathan Williams, and their music style was as wild and distorted as their personalities, contrasting with the quiet and restrained attitude of the drummer. They were channeling a lot of classic rock, many of the first tunes they sang were even heavy on Rolling Stones-que riffs, and in case someone had missed it, the drummer was wearing a ‘Natural Child’ tee-shirt with the head of Keith Richard on it.

I even read on a blog that they have some curious surrealist plan: they want ‘The Rolling Stones to pass on the torch to them in their farewell tour, which Natural Child has decided will be in 2011, by getting Jack White (Nashville resident) to introduce them.’

Good luck with that! But this actually says a lot about these entertaining jokers who delivered a set of straight Southern rock, sung at two voices, in a pure punk style.
