And you think it was completely dead? When I see bands still using MySpace, I feel bad for them, as if they had missed something, but I may be the one being totally wrong. According to Music Week, MySpace is preparing for a relaunch towards the end of the year, since the owner, Specific Media, ‘has held conversations with agencies, with a view to beginning a formal pitch process’.
This is what Rikki Webster, Specific Media’s senior communications manager for Europe, declared:
‘We've had a few exploratory conversations within the marketplace, but no formal pitch process is currently being undertaken.’
‘MySpace will look to roll out consumer-facing activity towards the end of this year, at which time we'll most likely undertake a formal pitch, but nothing is happening at this time.’
But wasn’t Justin Timberlake involved in all this? Indeed, Specific Media brought him along last June, and purchased the site from News Corp for about $35 million whereas it was worth $580 million in 2005!
When you think about it, everyone had a myspace page just a few years ago, then like a giant migration, everyone moved on to Facebook. and MySpace went from the most visited social networking site in the world in 2005-6 to this weird non-functional ghost-town site.
Well, Timberlake has just about 7 months to put the site back on its feet, but is it possible? At the time of the purchase Timberlake said:
‘There’s a need for a place where fans can go to interact with their favorite entertainers, listen to music, watch videos, share and discover cool stuff and just connect. MySpace has the potential to be that place.’
But that place already exist, it’s called, Facebook, YouTube, Spotify….
