My Secret Life by Mary Magpie

I haven’t always been the gauging, pink-haired, alt club-attending girl.

Though I’ve always been off the beaten path, I’ve occasionally walked along the footsteps others have lived on their whole life. Embarrassingly enough, when I was about …7? my dad bought me the very first Jonas Brothers’ album (which I requested).

I’ll admit that I liked a few songs, but it just wasn’t my thing.

A very close friend of mine at the time had a metal-loving brother. Sorta creepy but cooler and older. She got into My Chemical Romance through him and I loved them through her.

From there branched off Fall Out Boy and Panic! At The Disco and Simple Plan.

But no, it didn’t stop there. Death Cab For Cutie and Cute is What we Aim For sprouted Madina Lake and Alesana.

Warped Tour cds and unique friends made me even more obsessed with the alternative music scene.

Now, my group of friends is completely different.
 Kelly likes country and alternative.

Ben loves the Beatles, and Alex IS Weezer.

Regardless, Alternative Press Magazine and rocknyc itself has showed me some of my favorite bands and introduced me to bands I could never have found without trying to find something new.

Myspace and Facebook, and upperclassmen talking about a new band in the hallway and I go home and love them.

Underground Clubs in CT or Boston and other venues websites, and my mom.

 Music is a funny thing.

iPod to iPod, mouth to ear, magazine to eyes, and countless concerts have gotten me into the music I love today.

It is me, and I’m proud to say it. I’m not a cookie cutting member of my generation but I am proud to be who I am, even if it isn’t the mainstream that surrounds me. Im only 13. I have years of music to hear, years of opinions to form. With the support of all of you here, and the exploration of music ‘out there’ I have a funny feeling theres no turning back.
