My Morning Jacket’s Signing At Amoeba, Friday, May 8th, 2015

Over heard at Amoeba during the signing of ‘The Waterfall’, the new album of the band My Morning Jacket on Friday night: ‘my favorite artists are My Morning Jacket, Bob Dylan, and Björk’… Really? I thought, in this order? Whatever works for you! It was a rather short and fast signing, and for some reason, Jim James had decided to stand up the whole time while the rest of the band was sitting at the long table. They have the rustic look, a bit guys-in-the-great-outdoors, long unruly hair and beards, and they visibly take the time to talk to each of their fans and eventually pet a dog… My knowledge about My Morning Jacket is very minimal, I have heard them but can’t even name a song, I have to be honest here,.. although I am sure I probably would recognize a few of them if I hear them. I liked that song ‘A New Life’, off his solo album, but couldn’t really like the rest of the album.

My Morning Jacket did an intimate and sold out performance the day before, at Mack Sennett Studios, which is ironically located at two blocks from my house, and they played their entire new album … Billboard was there and described them as ‘one of rock’s most esteemed bands for more than the past decade’. I have to be totally out of the loop so!

Streaming the album at home, I am not totally convinced by this girl at Amoeba… May be all these vocal harmonies turn them into the new Crosby, Stills and Nash? I don’t know exactly, it’s a bit psychedelic, a bit Americana, a bit 80’s pop and a bit vague in my foggy mind. It is supposed to be break up album… Before leaving, Jim James made sure to do some shopping at Amoeba, and he bought some vintage concert flyers pinned on the wall, I think I read The Byrds at Albert King Palace on one of them.

‘The Waterfall’ is their 7th studio album and their first release in four years. Watch a bit of their performance at Mack Sennett Studios below. You can watch the band perform three songs, ‘Spring (Among the Living)’, ‘Thin Line’ and “Big Decisions’ but you will be able to see the entire concert on May 13th.
