Tickets go on sale September 21st, 2012 and Rihanna will be going forth May 4th, 2013 when she makes her only area performance. Only? Surely not… I would bet that she adds a couple of dates to that stand. May 4th will be a Saturday
.
I have every intention of going but no intention of liking her very much.
So why the negativity? Because I saw her at MSG over two years ago and here is what I wrote at the time: “The Rihanna Show is a full blast modern pop show and it is as good a way to spend 90 minutes and better than most. But it is the summer movie of summer tours: all bangs and blasts and forgotten before you leave the Garden.”
Admittedly, Ree Ree was pushing her worst album to date, Rated R, but in the end, the woman doesn’t have the bottle to kill on an Arena level. Her voice is so non descript (surely Rihanna’s biggest weakness) and the distance has nothing to feel it but special effects.
This time round the question will be, how far will “We Found Love” take her?
The five big women of pop are
- Lady Gaga
- Taylor Swift
- Katy Perry
- Rihanna
- Beyonce
But four of these names know how to put on a show and one simply does it. Four of these people have distinct personas and one is a cipher. Four of these people have proven they are more than factory cut outs, and one… who is sure what Rihanna is.
Sure, Grandma just died, tats, hangs in the village, Chris Brown –like that. But musically she is too sculpted by third parties. She has no shadow in concert. The show won’t do without showmanship. So, while I want to see post-Shout Rihanna, I don’t think I’ll like her.
