Of all the bands I've really really liked for a long long time, the Disco Biscuits are the last I am getting around to writing about, and the reason is I am not very comfortable with jam Bands. Even ones who seem to taking the entire concept of the Southern Boogie to whole other planets. Like these Philadelphia natives. The difference between these guys and, say, Widespread Panic isn't age though it may be drugs. The long improvised jam which seems to take a jazz concept and blowtorch it to an electric guitar, takes off from country and ends up in the deep south with shit on its shoes. Disco Biscuits start from some NU New York jazz worm and throw in white noise red hot guitar. And then get weird.
The result is Disco Biscuits, around since 1995, but on their 2011 Otherwise Law Abiding Citizen, they are the best jam band in the world. I don't know how a song can sound better than "Spraypaint" and remain in the jam idiom. And yet I missed it completely last year. And this from a band who have let our writers not once but twice into camp Bisco.
Last time round I made our writers promise to really nail the Disco Biscuits story for us. Needless to add, that was a complete waste of time and energy. By the time the teenage writers left Camp Bisco, older but wiser, we were thankful for anything they provided.
But this time, I am taking matters into my own hands and I am finally making it to Best Buy for their annual four night Biscuit Fest. Now look me check provisions:
1. MDMA – Check
2. weed – Check
3. Speed – Check
4. Party Shoes – check
Alright, off we go…
