I don't see how Buddy Guy could be any better Friday night at MSG, I am not exaggerating when I call Buddy and BB King far and away the best thing about the Clapton Benefit. With 30 plus blues greats in the room, Guy came out on top with a blistering and brilliant set. When he stopped a jam mid song because there wasn't enough time, the entire audience gasped in disappointment.
I dunno about anybody else, but I could have listened to Buddy alone for the rest of the evening and died happy. There is a reason why the 76 year old Chicago bluesman is considered a giant and a legend, it is because he is a great guitarist and a peak performer. Arena rock? This man could rock Melife, let alone MSG.
What he will do at BB King's on June 26th and June 27th is anyone's guess but to call it a musts ee is to miss the details here. This man can change your life, he plays the guitar with a punishing finger picking vivacity that never settles down and builds and subsides and builds again till he seems to have gone entirely out of his mind.
Guy played in Howling Wolf's band, he played with Muddy Waters, BB King,al of them, in the finishing end, the 1960s, just before that generation of blues greats who began electric guitar Chicago blues, before they died, he played with them. That isn't credentials, that's life experience.
"I'll play all fucking night, I don't care, I love what I'm doing", Guy says on Live At Legends. You miss this, don't blame me. I'll be there Thursday and there are still tix available so DO NOT WAIT!
