This is exactly what Trent Reznor was talking about last Sunday, I always think music and songs should be enough but we are way pass this stage these days and there is this never-ending search for over-the-top special effects and décor during band tours, that will distract the audience from the music but leave everyone in awe the head full of lights, sounds and other superfluous decorum.
Remember U2’s enormous claw for their last tour? The structure was 167 feet tall, required 120 trucks for transportation and the cost of each structure was between £15 million and £20 million… we should come up with a superlative for over-the-top, but, as I said before, I will always think that music – and a few balloons and confetti if you want to be entertaining – should be enough.
But Muse doesn’t think so, and nobody will be surprised! They kicked up their tour in France on Tuesday night with a pyramid on stage, although I am not sure what Bellamy is talking about in the following segment reported by NME:
‘It's basically an upside-down pyramid which is a very symbolic gesture. A lot of people think the pyramid represents power structures, you know, in every walk of life. Anything from basic corporate structures with a top down system where CEOs take all the profit and get paid more than the people at the bottom, which is the kind of down to earth version, to the Illuminati, you know.’
‘The pyramid seems to represent the power structures of the world. Turning it upside down is a gesture as to what we think of that.’
What the hell is he talking about, please explain…..because they put their pyramid upside down, they think they are changing the world order? Let’s them have their delusion and a-muse their audience.
Earlier this month, Bellamy had explained this 'stunt' was heavily inspired by the theatrics of Pink Floyd’s ‘The Wall’ tour, adding ‘Throughout the gig, it gradually comes down and consumes the band. So we end up eaten up by this pyramid thing, which is all very symbolic, of course.’
He is way too much into non-sense symbolism, he should shut up and sing! But thank you, I will pass on this tour, which will make Muse even bigger, … they have already carried the Olympic torch and made a crappy song for the games, but they want to reach the top of that pyramid for sure.
