I’ve written posts, reviews, school assignments, and interviewed Motion City Soundtrack. But I honestly believe this band changed my life.
When I was (even more) a youngin’, about ten or eleven, I was heavy into My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, Panic At The Disco. I kind of went through that little “emo kid” phase, for lack of a better term. Some of the music was a bit dark (ahem, MCR), but then I came across Motion City Soundtrack. I was instantly hooked on the brighter, more upbeat tempo and silly lyrics. They seemed like the perfect sing-along band so I invested in Even If It Kills Me.
Over time, this album grew on me. Upon first glance, it seemed like one of those CDs that you listen to once and forget about it, because it wasn’t that great. The more I listened to it, the more I focused on the lyrics, meaning, the way that this band would change a key and my emotions along with it. Their goofy lyrics mixed with the not-so-goofy ones, and I still think to this day the same thing I did back then: Justin Pierre, lyricist and vocalist, is a genius. A bit mad, but aren’t they all? The way he said a word could keep me hooked and there are easily ten or fifteen MCS songs that make me go back over and over again to just one part- whether it’s a word, note, lyric, or maybe the entire thing. I can honestly say that this is the only band that I have ever done that with.
And the more I thought about this band, the more I got into not only different music, but it caused me to get more into art, playing instruments, writing lyrics. An inspiration, but also they gave me the drive to expand on my talents.
Motion City Soundtrack is more than a band. They’re almost like an elite force of musician ninjas that attacked my brain and my ears and my life, changing me.
