Morrissey Speaks… But Not To Us: ‘Crowd-Funding Is A Desperate Measure’

Poor Morrissey, rejected by everyone! Speaking to Spanish newspaper El Pais, he talked about his label problems: ’I recently contacted some record and all have rejected me. Pop music lives in the era of marketing which just leads to people with very low levels of competition, it is much easier to get rid of them once six months of fame have evaporated.’

His album ‘World Peace is None of Your Business’ was released in July 2014, and Morrissey’s contract was cancelled just three weeks later. So what not doing what everyone does, the crowd-funding thing via Kickstarter? After all, it worked so well for Amanda Palmer…. No way, don’t even think about it for Morrissey:

‘It is a desperate measure, and insulting to your audience. We have already provided sufficient amounts of money. What is the next thing you’re going to ask? Brush our teeth? ‘

And like for many bands, touring is his main source of income:

‘It’s the only option left for me and fortunately it is very good and exciting. The only unpleasant part of this that, whenever a concert is canceled, the story captures attention; but if the concert takes place, it will hardly be mentioned. Many people enjoy writing negative things about me. Which is fine with me. Let them, if it makes them happy. ‘

Morrissey does not care because he knows very well he has the greatest connection with his audience you have ever seen: ‘The relationship with my audience is beyond music, something that the media generally ignore. I never consider my audience as “fans” because I think it is a derogatory term.’

Still he is well aware of the polarizing effect he has on people: ‘This is and has always been so. If you mention my name, people either vomit or get excited. It’s a compliment because it means that, at least, you are the original. Unfortunately, people who are original do not belong anywhere. Of course, when I look around, I think that maybe it’s a good thing. ‘

And his delusion for pop music has never been more acute:

‘It [pop music] does not have any intellectual demands, we are stuck with people like Ed Sheeran, who has nothing to say, or Sam Smith, who has been forced to achieve success and seems embarrassed. The charts are full of singers artificially created for whom we lose interest in no longer than a week.’

Needless to say there’s still no reunion in sight, and never will be,…what a surprise! ‘Old bands reunions do not work because it is impossible to preserve the spirit that once made people feel attracted to them. ‘

Morrissey lives immersed in his world, and according to him, this is his only option, ’without my imagination I would be like a vegetable’, but still knows about terrible things like ISIS, which makes him to rant and pest (as usually) against religions, then the entire humanity and obviously our lack of compassion for animals:’It’s as if they want the world to end, which is childish, and so much faith in a religion that enjoys so much violence is absurd. That said, it is hard to think of any religion that does not require conflict. Humans do not like each other.’

‘I hate the human race and I think the world would gain a lot if humans became extinct. In general, we are stupid, ignorant and destructive. Of course there are exceptions, but not many!’

‘How can you live in this world without fainting? It is impossible. While there is a slaughterhouse,’… ‘Belsen, Auschwitz, Spandau … survive in every big city. The Jews have been replaced by animals. ‘

He has made this one before, people hate this comparison and he knows that! But Morrissey really does not care a bit, and when asked if he would do something beside music or literature, he answers, in a true Morrissey manner: ‘No. The microphone is my tombstone.’
