More On Jack White And the Artificial
Still, what a putz. As Helen bach reported the other day, here is Jack talking to Esquire about Lady Gaga: ““I don’t think she lives it because it’s all artifice. It’s all image with no meaning behind it. You can’t sink your teeth into it. It’s a sound bite. It’s very of this age, because that’s what people want. They want a Twitter line, a jpeg, an MP3” I have no idea where young Jack is aiming his bile here, but if it is Lady Gaga for being artificial, who the hell isn’t. All art is ARTIFICE, hence the name. And as it should be because I have enough troubles dealing with my life without dealing with Lady gaga or Jack Whites for that matter.
Art is fake. Rock is fake, the truest artist in the world is outrageously unreal, has nothing whatsoever to do with their own life. Life is too messy, too lonely, too inevitable: if you stare right into life it is so black you would suffer from nyctolopea, you would go blind. It barely stands thinking about. A great pop artist is great because her artififace helps us face stuff together that is very hard to face alone.
Later on White clarified his remarks to Esquire: "I never said anything about her music, or questioned the authenticity of her songs in any way. I was in a conversation about the drawbacks of image for the sake of image, and that it is popular nowadays to not question an image in front of you, but only to label it as "cool" or "weird" quickly and dispose of it. I don't like my comments about Lady Gaga's presentation being changed into some sort of negative critique of her must."
Fair enough, though he still seems baffled by the question of artificide and if he isn't upset by Gaga, or by her image, I guess it is the aduience he is pissed at? Lest we forget, White is a dick, but a gifted dick.
