Further to Iman's somewhat spurious sneer at Radionhead's paper, here is the real dope! So when Radiohead was mentioning a newspaper for the physical release of ‘The King of Limbs’, they were also literally talking about a newspaper.
With the help of artist Stanley Donwood, the band has produced a paper (12 pages of real paper and ink) called the Universal Sigh, and they are planning a massive and free distribution of it in 61 locations worldwide.
This can be confusing, since they are also selling a ‘newspaper album’ version of their physical release, a sort of CD-vinyl records-artwork super combo, but this Universal Sigh is a different thing.
Donwood posted this on his blog on March 2nd:
‘But now, from here, they seem less ensnaring, and my new project, possibly the most ambitious yet, is taking shape across the digital lines of communication. This new project will, if everything goes to plan, involve many major cities of the world.
I feel a little like a Bond villain, hiding from the world in this hilltop fastness, with lists of capital cities taped to the walls of my lair, scrumpled versions of my plans littering the metal floor. I should think up a suitable codename for it, perhaps.’
What a scenario! So much mystery for a free newspaper! But the mystery was not that well kept as there are a few on sale on ebay, and one copy was already sold for $60!
For the occasion, a website has been set up in order to help you find the nearest newsstand where you’ll be able to pick it up on Tuesday (US) or Monday (rest of the world).
Here are the locations where you may be able to find it on Tuesday at 1pm, in Los Angeles and New York,
Santa Monica, 1248 3rd St. Promenade Santa Monica, CA 90401
Los Angeles, Hollywood, 6400 West Sunset Boulevard Los Angeles, CA 90028
Los Angeles, Silverlake, 3700 Sunset Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90026
New York, Soho, 560 Broadway New York, NY 10012
New York, Times Square, 1515 Broadway New York, NY 10036
New York, Union Square, 4 Union Square South New York, NY 10003
It is weird, I know the Silver Lake location, and there is no newsstand over there, so I guess they will hand out the papers in the street?
For all other locations in the US and everywhere else in the world (well, not exactly, there is no location in Africa or South America), go there:
