Mooooon Rivaaaaaah
Why have I never written about the late great Henry Mancini? The man behind so many great soundtracks, “The Pink Panther” for one. “Hatari” for another. And “Breakfast At Tiffany’s”of course.
I dunno know. he has been dead too long.
I didn’t know Monica Mancini was Henry’s daughter when I streamed her gorgeous version of Jackson Browne’s “These Days”.
Mancini Fille is an accomplished jazz singer in her own write and can be heard on countless soundtracks as well as singing with symphonies and recording the singer-songwriter recently released look back I’ve Loved These Days.
“These Days” in its original form is overwhelming in its sadness: Browne builds and builds and builds and gets great sorrow in its lack of catharcism.
Mancini basis her take firmly on the sweetest of strings and piano -it seems unelectrical, a study in how the deepest of feelings can be wrought through the most contemplative of sounds.
In the end mostly everything drops out except for voice and piano and on this Father’s Day, I hope your children honor Browne’s request on all of our behalf:
“Don’t confront me with my failures, I have not forgotten them.”
