What does it say about our society when Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Carrie Underwood and Pharrell are among the 100 most influential people on the planet? They are among Time’s most influential celebrities of 2014, and if there are 96 other ones, they represent what we are talking about here: music. Of course, Beyonce is on the cover, flawless without make up – or this is what they want us to believe but it is probably photoshopped like any other cover – with straight blonde hair, wearing white underwear and a see-through shirt, looking less and less African American as she ages…. May be they could have picked someone a bit more,… influential? You know someone who passes laws, tries to find a cure for cancer or build shelters for homeless? Nah, this is not glamorous like Beyonce. Plus her Jay Z Husband was on the cover last year, and since she may be making more money than him this year, her year had come.
What have these people accomplished exactly, beside making raunchy sex-charged pop music or happy-go-lucky to boring tunes? Is singing about sex being influential for a woman? I guess because this is what Beyonce and Miley do most of the time. Sure they are influential for fashion, they probably influence the style of the next bikini you are gonna find at Target this summer, but is this what Time magazine regards as influential? This is soooo sad.
But the introductions of these influential people are worth reading:
Beyonce by Sheryl Sandberg: ‘Her secret: hard work, honesty and authenticity. And her answer to the question, What would you do if you weren’t afraid? appears to be “Watch me. I’m about to do it.” Then she adds, “You can, too.”’
I am speechless, what can I say? I wonder what Beyonce can do that I can’t do myself, beside buying expensive shit of course…
Miley Cyrus by godmother Dolly Parton: ‘If I didn’t know how smart and talented Miley is, I might worry about her. But I’ve watched her grow up. So I don’t. She knows what she’s doing.’
This is actually funny and clever, Dolly seems to say this girl is a bit crazy but she is alright, but well she is nuts…
Pharrell Williams by Justin Timberlake:‘That’s what Pharrell does. He injects that vibrant energy into the music in a way that you can feel. Whether it’s the chord changes that remind you of another time or the melody that instantly grabs you, you are transported to another place. You smile, you dance, you clap along. His music actually does make you happy. Maybe that’s why he still looks younger than the rest of us. Yep … Pharrell Williams is having way too much fun. And I don’t know about you, but I hope he never stops.’
And not a word about this hat? This is the most influential thing about Pharrell.
And I kept the least exciting part for the end, Carrie Underwood by Brad Paisley: ‘But it’s her decency as a person that is so impressive. She’s an advocate for causes like animal rights and the Red Cross. She has publicly challenged lawmakers when she’s disagreed with them, and covered controversial issues in her music.’
Actually, I retract what I said, animal rights and the Red Cross? She may be the most influential of all of them, in the right sense of the term.
