Alice in Chains former bassist, Mike Starr was found dead yesterday, at the age of 44 in a Salt Lake City home. According to TMZ who broke the sad news, the police was called to the house at 1:42 pm, and found the controlled substances Xanex and the painkiller Opana alongside the body.
A spokesman declared there was nothing to indicate that this was foul play by another individual.
Starr had battled addiction for a long time, and in 2010, he was featured in the third season of the VH1 reality television series Celebrity Rehab, for his treatment for heroin addiction. Last February, he was arrested and booked on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance in Salt Lake City.
The influential rock band Alice in Chains was formed in 1987 in Seattle by Jerry Cantrell and Layne Staley, released 4 studio albums (2 were number-one albums) and received 8 Grammy nominations. Starr played for the band from 1987 to 1993.
Many artists and friends (former Guns N’ Roses drummer Steven Adler, Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum, Mötley Crüe’s Nikki Six and many others) tweeted yesterday to express their sympathy.
Starr’s father was quoted assaying: ‘It’s a terrible shock and tragedy’.
