I don’t know who announced it first, may be NME since it is a story from England, but promo posters for Lou Reed and Metallica’s upcoming album ‘Lulu’ have been banned from London underground. The reason? They looked too much like graffiti!
I don’t get it, this armless mannequin with this sad expression on her face and ‘Lulu’ written over it with what it seems to be blood, looks like graffiti? They would have said, it looks like an aggression to women — as this girl seems to have been attacked, killed or raped — and I may have understood their point, although not the censorship,… but this thing has nothing to do with graffiti!
The album of this weird collaboration is due out November 1st in North America and October 31st worldwide, and is said to be ‘a collection of songs inspired by the writings of German expressionist playwright Frank Wedekind’.
Here we go, The Lulu play written in 1895 was a ‘story of a sexually-enticing young dancer who rises in German society through her relationships with wealthy men, but who later falls into poverty and prostitution’. Wedekind’s plays involved a lot of sexuality and violence, and of course caused scandals,… Lou Reed recently described the album as ‘the best thing I ever did’, so we’ll see!
