“I am very proud of the fact that 20 years on people tell me they became a vegetarian as a result of Meat is Murder. I think that is quite literally rock music changing someones life – it’s certainly changing the life of animals. It is one of the things I am most proud of.”, Johnny Marr, The Smiths
This as noted in Neil Taylor’s new book Document and Eyewitness: An Intimate History of Rough Trade.
I personally gave up meat in 1983. Never looked back and remember fondly blasting the title song. The eerie bleating at the intro to this day sends a chill up my spine. Without turning this into a Vegan soap box I can state clearly that anything that will assist anyone in removing animal by products from their life is OK with me. It a great song, its a great meaning and sometime you can hear the Magpie and I belt out the lines.
I’ve always loved The Smiths, and Morrisey as well. I admire these thinking men. Actually I can use this post to actually put up the lyrics.
Read them. Make tomorrow a vegetarian day in honor of this post!
Heifer whines could be human cries
Closer comes the screaming knife
This beautiful creature must die
This beautiful creature must die
A death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER
And the flesh you so fancifully fry
Is not succulent, tasty or kind
It’s death for no reason
And death for no reason is MURDER
And the calf that you carve with a smile
It is MURDER
And the turkey you festively slice
It is MURDER
Do you know how animals die?
Kitchen aromas aren’t very homely
It’s not “comforting”, cheery or kind
It’s sizzling blood and the unholy stench
Of MURDER
It’s not “natural”, “normal” or kind
The flesh you so fancifully fry
The meat in your mouth
As you savour the flavour
Of MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT’S MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT’S MURDER
Oh … and who cares about an animals life?
And before you throw down some People Eating Tasty Animals redneck bullshit counter attack…think about it. Or Ill send a pigeon to shit on you next.
