May Day Parade Live Part II: Absolutely brutal crowd but the bands were great by Mary Magpie:

Our youngest and sharpest contributor Mary Magpie (or Bach Junior to all you Helen Bach fans -Mary is Helen’s daughter ) shares her take on the Mayday Parade concert reviewed earlier today by Helen.

My mom and I walked into the jam-packed, sold out Toads Place. The crowd was 98% girls. You Me At Six were on the stage, doing their thing, and I immediately got sucked in. I forgot there were hundreds of little girls trying to push their way to the front to get a band to look at them. They were the same cute, fun, easy-to-dance-to band that I always secretly jumped around to in my bedroom. They looked like they were just happy to be here in the States. I don’t know if I was the only one who had ever heard of them, they were a pretty unpopular band, but I hope that they make it big here AND the U.K.

Next up was The Secret Handshake. They reminded me of Nickasaur! with drums, but nowhere near as talented. They were alright, if you like altered voices, a synth, drums, and a faulty bass line. *sigh* it was just another band to sit through in waiting for Mayday.

Set Your Goals came on stage, and started pumping out a thick bass line, drum beats, and melodic chaos. The incredibility of stage presence told me they loved what they were doing and were confident about it. The crowd seemed to enjoy it to, because they were dancing and moshing along. They reminded me a bit of Four Year Strong, who I am a HUGE fan of, as well as my mother. Lucky, as we were leaving, we grabbed their cd. They’re good live AND recorded.

Last for us was Mayday Parade. Starting up with “Jamie All Over”, the crowd belted out the words. Knowing every word to every song, I wasn’t conscious of my voice or anything else. I just let go. The band had so much energy, soon the entire crowd was dancing, jumping, and even crowd-surfing. Singing along to Derek Sander’s wonderful voice has left me a scratchy one this morning. But I don’t care, I’m still gladly belting out “When I Get Home, You’re So Dead” without mind that I have choir on Tuesday. Mayday was much better than I expected them to be, and I realized something. They weren’t one of those bands who have beautiful harmony on the CD and not live, in “Three Cheers for Five Years”, they didn’t fail to capture the crowd with their bold harmonies. I agree with my mom when she says that they’re better live than recorded(but I still LOVE both).

I couldn’t believe the crowd. It was absolutely brutal. I understand that sold out Toad’s is crazy, but it was the people. Constantly pushed and elbowed, it was all I could do not to punch some one in the face. My mom and I just couldn’t take it anymore, and left. It wasn’t a big deal because we’ve seen The Academy Is… countless times.

Having a messed-up voice and a few bruises was worth it for an incredible night. Now I proudly sport my “Miserable At Best” Mayday shirt in memory of an unforgettable concert.
