Music inspires. You see the quote “Music = Life” so often. But can you pinpoint a song that has inspired or guided you? I may be the youngest of writers here but I can clearly define a song that has inspired me more than any other. Could be my limited years of life acumulation makes it easier, but lyrically this should be timeless.
“I Want Something To Live For” by The Rocket Summer is a song that has spoken to me like no other. The lyrics have inspired me to be who I am. The strong, powerful message to be yourself and live your life without anything holding you back is one that everyone should listen to. “Once I was fearless, goin’ up against the world. Optimistic, seeing all the reasons for good through the darkness, I could live through anything. Where, where did it go?”
This is the first line of the song, and it stands out. The man in this song used to be brave, he used to be confident, and then he lost that and became a different man. This is unfortunate, but it happens more often than people think. Every day people lose themselves to conformity, to fear, to everything else. This evokes a memory in me of a time where I used to be brave, then I was fearful for a while. Now, I am different and back to living my life the way it was meant to be lived.
However, the chorus inspires me the most. “So stop fearing death, I want something to live for. I’ve been holding my breath; I want something to live for. ‘Cause when the deaf feel the sound, I want something to live for. I wanna make you proud, I want something to live for.”
People may not necessarily be literally holding their breath, but metaphorically, those who aren’t living their life to the fullest and they’re filling it with worries or concerns aren’t truly living. This line evokes the emotion of happiness in me because it always reminds me to stop holding my breath and live my life the way I want to, no matter what. This is because whether you fear death or you’re waiting to make someone proud or any other situation, it can make you truly live.
“Hey, how’s it going?” “Good. And how are you?” “Good.” Often do you ever wonder how much that isn’t true? Will you help me out if you can? I’ll take you as you are, please just take me as I am.” When people lie about how things are going and keep it bottled up inside, they’re holding back. Holding back keeps you from living a life that’s as close to stress-free as possible. This line evokes a feeling of realization for me. It’s helped me to not keep my emotions bottled up, and it’s also helped me find a way to come to the realization that I can release stress in affective ways.
The lines “I do hope, I believe in you. I need it now, God, I need you. And just your words I believe are true, but sometimes I just fall down and break, though I don’t mean to” also speak to me. It evokes a feeling of faith in me. I have hope, and I have God for help, but I too sometimes just fall down. I think that everyone does at times; that’s just life. These realistic words definitely snap things into perspective.
“Stop fearing that and never look back. I swear, I wish I could.” The first part of this line is absolutely beautiful. It’s telling you to stop fearing whatever you are and move on without going back to the painful past. This evokes a powerful feeling in me that I should forget the bad things in my past and focus on the present.
This song has touched me in a way that not any other piece of writing, be it a novel or a poem or another song, has done before. It’s shockingly realistic and truly written from the heart. It’s almost as if it was written specifically for me; to send me a message that I should live my life and just let go. It’s helped me become the person I am. I’ve found something to live for.
“I Want Something To Live For” By The Rocket Summer
Once I was fearless,
Going up against the world
Optimistic, seeing all the reasons for.
Crept through the darkness, I could live through anything.
where, where did it go?
I wanna feel it, like I did back then but more.
I really need it, more than I’ve ever before.
I believed in oh oh,
Where, where did it go?
So stop fearing death. I want something to live for
I’ve been holding my breath, I want something to live for.
‘Cause when the death feels the sound, I want something to live for.
I wanna make you proud, I want something to live for.
Hey, how’s it going?
Good
And how are you?
Good
Often do you wonder how much that isn’t true?
Will you help me out if you can?
I’ll take you as you are, please take me as I am.
Stop fearing death. I want something to live for
I’ve been holding my breath, I want something to live for
‘Cause when the death feels the sound, I want something to live for.
I wanna make you proud, I want something to live for.
I do hope, I believe in you and I need it now.
God I need you. And just your words I believe are true,
But just sometimes I fall down and break, though I don’t mean too.
Stop fearing that and never look back I swear I wish I could.
Stop fearing death. I want something to live for
I’ve been holding my breath, I want something to live for.
‘Cause when the death feels the sound, I want something to live for.
I wanna make you proud, I want something to live for.
I want something to live for
I want something to live for
I want something to live for
(Stop fearing death. I want something to live for
I’ve been holding my breath)
‘Cause when the death feels the sound, I want something to live for.
I wanna make you proud, I want something to live for.
