Unfortunately, I arrived a little bit too late for Marvelous Toy’s set at the Silver Lake Jubilee, and got to catch three of their last songs. But I could hear their joyous outbursts of keyboard and energetic rhythms when I was entering the festival.
They have catchy tunes, driven by that pounding keyboard played by Jordan Hudock, mixed with a charming xylophone played by Ny Lee, and these determined endearing vocals à la Billy Joel meets Okkervil River.
Their songs are instantaneously recognizable with their in-your-face delivery, furious beats quite hard to categorize, but that’s the beauty of it! I was wondering, is this one of these LA bands, which has been able to absorb many different influences and create its new indie-country-rock sound?
Like their last song (that I filmed), ‘I have to write this over’,… upbeat and light hearted… it had all the promises of a winning hit with its damned catchy oo-oo-oo chorus and its running piano part,… I wished I had seen the whole set, but here is their bandcamp page: http://marveloustoy.bandcamp.com
