Marcia Wallace, Voice Artist, Dies

I can’t remember the last time I wrote about the death of somebody not related to the music business,  and I don’t really think I’ve begun here because the great actress Marcia Wallace, so funnyas his secretary on “The Bob Newhart Show” , is best known as a “voice artist” and with wild blurt of a “ha” she personified a new sort of a woman as Edna Krabappel, Bart and Liza’s favorite teacher.

Edna was the hard drinking, promiscuous, less than thrilled divorcee who went from Mama’s boy Principal Skinner to strict Christian Ed Flanders, whom she eventually.

From her raspy, intoxicated saturated voice she slowly, over a couple of seasons, became the fixture we know. In a storyline where Bart impersonates a handsome male suitor (through letters) Mrs. Krabappel became a fully formed character and Wallace, already a highly accomplished actress, found her perfect role.

It is, of course, immortality as one of the most beloved characters on the longest running Prime Time (any time) cartoon show ever.

The Simpsons and Newhart were far from her only roles: Marcia made a steady income in the 1970s as a guest on Network game shows, before that she appeared in the theater, and after that on many sitcoms. A great comedienne, she was always in demand.

Wallace died last week at the age of 70. She is survived by her son, Michael Hawley. One part actress, one part MILF, RIP Mrs. Krabappel.
