I went to go see I Kill Giants at their second to last show ever, supposedly, and directly after they played, a quartet called LVL UP graced the stage in front of me. Â I didn’t quite know what to expect, but was pretty optimistic. Â I was incredibly impressed by their performance as a whole, so much so that I picked up one of their super cute and super comfy crew necks. Â I’m a massive fan, and they’re all I’ve been listening to since Friday night.
Their album “Space Brothers” is an absolute masterpiece. Â The transitions are smooth, and as a whole, it’s just a continuous noise that I could listen to for hours. Â The songs are short and sweet, but hold so much complexity and intricacy. Â “Roman Candle” starts off the debut album, and opens it on a high note. Â Energetic and strong guitars welcome the well-fitting vocals and create a nearly classic punk sound. Â It flows so well, and the drummer is phenomenal.
It fades flawlessly into “Alabama West”, a slower tune that gives me chills. Â It’s so beautiful, and the musicianship is stunning. Â The guitar reminds me vaguely of Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band’s ballads, and that’s fantastic. Â However, as soon as this calming scene is set, the band jumps into the 27-second jam “Black Mass”, and it’s probably my favorite track of the whole album. Â Though incredibly quick, it forces you to listen to it over and over again because it leaves you hungry for more, and hey, I’m not complaining.
“Apocalyptophobia” is another song I have to listen to on repeat. Â I wish it could go on forever. Â The energy of it all creates a sense of urgency that would fit so well amongst a crowd of Joyce Manor fans. Â It has a punkier feel, and the band as a whole is tight and interwoven, showing off their mind-blowing talent. Â It’s perfect.
LVL UP is one of the best bands I’ve seen live in a while, and I can’t wait to catch ’em again when they swing by.
