Listen Up 7-14-12

1. Money Won't Change You – James Brown – Sure, it is mostly about Maceo but it is also Brown's great lyric of all time. The chorus isn't a cliche because people don't know it, it is a deep truth about life. Not true all the time (extreme poverty and extreme wealth will change you) but wiser than it appears: "Money won't change you but time will take you out" is both upsetting and anodyne, because it points to the worthlessness of money and life itself as a palliative – Grade – A

2. Swing Lo Magellan – Dirty Projectors – It's a breezily string stirrer, though more downbeat than the piano ballad later on the album – Grade: A

3.Sorted For E's And Wizzz – Pulp – "Is this the way  they say the future's meant to feel? Or just 20,000 people standing in a field?" Going out to Henry and Layne – Grade: A

4. You can't Have My Love – Wanda jackson – So twangy sounds like a novelty drag but Wanda's upper register is so great and she has so much character, it seems like something more – Grade: B+

5. Planet Earth – Duran Duran – Live in 2011 and with a lot more thump than I remember – Grade: B+

6. Baby Won't You Please come Home – Ray Charles – Charles is complicated, the blues are straightforward, so Charles built a bridge for himself. But not here – Grade: B+

7. Lost  – Frank Ocean – This isn't hard to like because it is jazzy. It ain't jazz. It is hard to like because it is  arty. Pull off the synth and vocals and stick on electric guitar and what have you got? Dirty Projectors. – Grade: B+

8. Machine Shop – Kevin Greenspon – Beg, steal, borrow, check this guy out in the Northeast august/September – Grade: A

9. Trouble With Hello Is Goodbye – Frank Sinatra Jr – Look at it this way, if Babe Ruth had a son and his song was a creer .250 hitter, what you would say is not bad but not his dad – Grade: B+

10. Silly Love – 10 cc – this is power pop and it taught Squeeze a thing or three – Grade: A
