These new Youth Lagoon songs are so rich and imaginative you can’t make sense of them at the first listening even though you know you’re gonna madly love them. In 2010, the young Trevor Powers dropped ‘The Year of Hibernation’, and fans are now impatiently waiting for its follow up, ‘Wondrous Bughouse’, set to be released on March 5th via Fat Possum.
After listening to ‘Dropla’ a month ago, we can now stream the second track ‘Mute’, which just appeared on Soundcloud. This is some triumphant track if there is one, the 6-minute song will brighten your room like an explosion of burgeoning multicolor flowers on the first day of spring. 'Mute' is a grand-scale layered psychedelic-pop tune, populated by more rainbow-sounds than the rain forest on acid, making my mind wander somewhere between The Flaming Lips’ ‘Buggin’ and Panda Bear’s ‘Tomboy’, minus the fuzziness… not a bad place actually.
The epic track is actually complex, going from a totally triumphant jubilant opening, falling into metallic sounds glittering and fizzling all over the place, spiraling and then morphing into symphonic and keyboard weirdness.
Meanwhile, Youth Lagoon will soon start a massive US tour, and I just hope he will stop by Los Angeles between these two Coachella dates in April.
