I think I have missed a few things, I had a busy weekend, but didn’t Queens of the Stone Age release more songs from their so highly anticipated album? Actually, another one leaked on Monday,… at this rhythm, we will have listened to the whole thing when it is finally out!
‘Keep You Eyes Peeled’ is the new track, played live and loud during an in-studio session for a Belgian radio station last week, but earlier, two other tracks were also made available, ‘I Sat By The Ocean’ and ‘If I had a Tail’.
‘Keep You Eyes Peeled’ is sludgy muddy metal at its best, with a contained rage, some aggressive guitars pluming here and there, and Homme’s usual badass-haunting vocals, eventually growing into a more furious and expansive sound at one point.
‘I Sat By The Ocean’ is much more lighter and playful, almost upbeat and totally foot-tapping all along the way, with a shining-smiling guitar line, a catchy chorus, some smooth roaring guitar solos, and that very enjoyable bass line,… I smell the radio hit.
‘If I had a Tail’ is a pulsating and darker song, growing in sound without going overboard, with squeaking guitars and an obvious dance rhythm, almost going funky-disco? May be that’s the one with one of their announced guests?
Let’s see, with ‘I Appear Missing’, we have already heard four songs off ‘…Like Clockwork’ which has only 10 tracks. Even though they are growing a bit on me, I didn’t totally like these songs at the first listening,… if they are the best ones on the album, I am not sure it will raise to its expectations. QOSTA are all about excess and epic wide-screen songs that turn into monsters of sounds, ravage your eardrums, while piling up mounts and mounts of noise that doesn’t leave you intact when it’s over,… and I am not hearing this too much here.
In any case, they are apparently playing the Gibson Amphitheater on August 17th in Los Angeles, and I will be there.
