The very prolific Mark Oliver Everett, aka Eels, has just released a track off his future album ‘Wonderful, Glorious’,… the title in itself is already a whole program, and the new song ‘Peach Blossom’ is an interesting case of weirdness, a dirty sound mixed with sweet melodies and many unexpected detours, just like during the good old times; you can definitively hear the Eels’ sound from an early era, may be like a combination of ‘SoulJacker’ and ‘Daisies of the Galaxy’?
Starting with lots of heavy bombastic drumming, an interesting fuzzy bass line, and spoken lyrics coming from Mr. E’s signature voice talking about peach blossom, tiger lily and marigold, the tune suddenly and briefly breaks down into a melancholic melody before starting again with the propulsive and robotic sound and a few more surprises. This song is like a of bouquet of flowers, made of a lot of different flavors, all intertwined into each other with complexity and contrast.
‘Wonderful, Glorious’ will be released on February 5th via Vagrant, and it will be the Eels’ tenth album! If you pre-order the album, you’ll get an immediate download of the track, so head to their site to see the various pre-order options.
