Last nights concert began at 8pm, ended at 130am, and was, essentially, four one hour sets plus guests. The sets were by Crosby Stills and Nash, Paul SImon, Stevie Wonder and Bruce Springsteen. The guests included BB King and Billy Joel. It was very good, if not, as Nash claimed, “woodstock” -it wasn’t even Woodstock II. Occasionally it was great.
The best set was by (surprise, surprise) Springsteen, the worst by CSN but nobody came close to embarrassing themselves. The best moment, indeed one of the few transcendental moments, was Stevie Wonder playing “The Way You Make Me Feel” with John Legend.
Other highlights included Tom Morello’s incendiary guitar solo on “The Ghost Of Tom Joad”, Dion’s ageless “The Wanderer”, Paul Simon’s rockin’ “Late In The Evening” and the always brilliant Jackson Browne singing “The Pretender” with Crosby and Nash performing back up vocals.
The low point was a deadly “Jungleland”.
The organization was excellent except for some tech glitches in Wonders set and a ridiculous half hour break from 1115p till 1145p when Bruce hit the stage.
I’ll write a full post soon.
