Justin Vernon Is Recording A New Album With Rapper Astronautalist

According to Citypages.com/gimmenoise, Justin Vernon is making new music, but this time it’s gonna be rather different, as Minneapolis rapper Astronautalist has joined him in his Wisconsin studio, with Bon Iver drummer S. Carey and producer Ryan Olson.

The press became aware of it via Astronautalist’s own Tumblr, as the white rapper posted a few pictures like this one, with the text:

‘this is my new band: Justin Vernon (Bon Iver, Gayngs) + Sean Carey (S.Carey) + Ryan Olson (Gayngs, Poliça, Marijuana Death Squads), and lil’ ole me. amen.’

Interviewed by the paper, he described the experience:

There were several times during those three days where I couldn't believe that a sound just fell perfectly into place. Often times you get one of those when you make a record, or two of those, over the course of weeks and weeks and weeks. This process was exhilarating, and it drove us further. We were originally going to be down there for a day.

The guy has been Vernon’s good friend for the past two years, and with the help of some whiskey (probably some Bushmills Irish Whiskey, the brand Bon Iver shamelessly endorsed last year) they decided to record material over the weekend.

But what will the end product sound like?

According to Astronautalist, it will kind of sound like a hip-hop record, with a lot of cuts as ‘There may be tracks where I freestyle for hours and hours, and we may end up using four words’.

It’s impossible to give my opinion about something I haven’t heard, but is it going to be Bon Iver’s ethereal vocals over rap tempo? Yuuuck!

But no no no said Bothwell, ' It's not going to be that’, without revealing more, not even the name of the project, just adding ‘I think everyone should abandon their expectations of what it's going to be, because it's probably going to be very far off.’

Oh well, are they going to reinvent music? Why so much mystery? What the hell do they think we can expect with guitars, synths, computers, a boring singer and a rapper?

One last thing, we are going to hear the music sooner than we think, I just don’t understand why Kanye West was not invited to join, I thought he was Justin’s best buddy.
