Maybe I'm a sucker, I'll believe most things about most people but… remember when Paris Hilton went on the Tonight Show and claimed she had found God and was in Bible classes and when pressed as to what her favorite passage was, couldn't remember one. Meet Justin Bieber.
Bieber has just told the world he is very religious (not spiritual, an easier concept to sell) and the world is currently rolling its eyes so far back they are falling out of their ears. Bieber's Pastor Judah Smith of The City Church in Kirkland, Washington told E! News (that may well be the most ridiculous line I've ever written) ''Justin and I share Scriptures on a regular basis and communicate. And I think you find a lot of comfort and clarity in the Scriptures.''
Er, I don't believe a word. Does anybody. This quote I do believe: "'I think that's part of the reason I'm here. Not just because I'm talented, but because God had a purpose for me to just help people. I'm spiritual… although I slept in [and missed] church yesterday. I haven't been to church in so long, and I planned on going, and I slept in. I was upset. It's all good. God forgives me.''
I really think celebrities should be a little bit careful with the God stuff. I am on the record as being an agnostic but agnostic or not I have very real problems with a god who has ever intervened in human affairs. The problem isn't just numbers, omnipotence has its own rewards, but the decision as to who to help. "God answered my prayers and I got a hit single" seems to suggest God didn't answer the hopes of children STARVING TO DEATH… it beggars the imagination. That doesn't mean it isn't true. It means I don't understand the thought process. It is occluded from me.
Who knows who believes what, but me? I do know that Bieber is a plank and this is being said right now for publicity purposes. The Pastor was interviewed by E! News: in the words of the poet OMG!
