Remember about this Disney-Joy Division mash-up tee-shirt? It has been pulled from the stores. A Disney representative talked to Pitchfork and declared:
‘As soon as we became aware there could be an issue, we pulled it from our shelves and our online store to review the situation further.’
An issue? Were they afraid to get sued by the UK band for using the cover artwork from their Unknown Pleasures album? Some blogs said it was not possible since the image (an illustration representing pulses from the first-discovered pulsar) was public domain.
And even Peter Hooke was okay with it, as he had declared to the LA Times:
‘I take it as a compliment. If I had a pound for every time someone bootlegged Joy Division, I’d be as rich as Disney. But it’s interesting in a kitsch way. It’s this cross between something very adult and this well-known image of childhood. I’ve heard it’s sold out, so maybe it’ll become a kind of urban legend.’
So what could be the issue? Fans complaining and all the negative comments online? May be, but the shirt was already sold out on Tuesday and it will certainly be a collector. A few of them are already on sale one Bay, with many bids! Highest bid so far? $222! Some people sure know how to catch that money wave.
