I have avoided Huntington Beach this last week of July because of the US Open of Surfing and the crazy large crowd this event attracts. Last year, it took me more than 1 hour and half to park before trying to find a spot at Weezer’s concert, and I ended up seeing almost nothing at all.
But there was a Joe Strummer tribute at 2nd Floor, a restaurant-art-gallery downtown Huntington Beach on August 4th. Garageland, a tribute to the Clash frontman was also a benefit for his charity Strummerville, which supports aspiring musicians and projects that help change the world through music.
Punks and skaters came to contribute their music and art, as there were some acoustic sets by Joey Briggs of The Briggs and Eban Sterling of Stagger and Fall who donated to the cause.
Duane Peters, frontman for the US Bombs and skater, contributed with several pieces dedicated to the Clash and Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros, whereas pro skater Jason Adams had decorated several decks with some Joe-Strummer-inspiration, and had made the promo poster with Lyle Wessel. There was also a piece by Chuck Adame, the promotional and art director for KROQ, and some by Lance Cyril Mountain, son of pro skater Lance Mountain, who had recreated some of Strummer’s iconic shirts.
According to the OC Weekly, the place was packed, with a long line to get in…
