At a recent lunch my friend Liam Murphy and I are got onto the subject of music so while everybody rolled their eyes and tossed their salad we discussed best (not favorite) rock album of all time. Liam went with MJ’s Thriller, me? I went with Are You Experienced? I was being kinda consistent there. In an article for Creem in 1982 I chose the same album for the answer to the same question.
Thriller was an excellent album (its greatness lay in its promotional execution) although I am among the crowd who prefer the template for Thriller and everything that came after, Off the Wall. Are You Experienced? changed the way the electric guitar was played.
I never saw Jimi play in person but Rock NYC contributing writer Robert Nevin did -opening for the Monkees I believe. I would’ve loved to so if I could he wouldn’t get away with a two or even three hour concert. It would have to be an all day and all of the night extravaganza with drug breaks between sets. So here: live from the car park of the old Giants Stadium: Jimi Hendrix and friends
