Andrew Lloyd Webber's, not to mention lyricist Tim Rice), greatest moment, perhaps because it's the greatest story ever told, right, is making a comeback. Broadway eagerly awaits the March 2012 mounting of Jesus Christ Superstar. faux rock? Sure. but better faux-rock than faux-opera.
Along with giving the world Yvonne Elliman and Murray head (I know, but it was 40 years ago and I know who they are) (ps Murray head was the bi-sexual artist in the brilliant "Sunday Bloody Sunday"), the original album, which is how it started life,a s well as the musical and the movie, sported a helluva lot of great songs. It isn't just "I Don't Know How To Love Him", the very first song, "Heaven On Their Mind" is great.
I saw it on Broadway, an iffy touring production, and it was so good.
But the buzz on the March production is deafening. Des Mcanuff, the bloke behind the hugely successful staging of "Tommy" is bringing it to us.
