Jean Michel Jarre Announces An All-Star Electronica Double Album

When you pronounce the name of Jean Michel Jarre, I enter into a time machine and think back about a time I spent in Paris in the late 70’s. At that time, the electronic music pioneer gave a free concert Place de la Concorde for Bastille Day, and it drew about one million people! I don’t remember seeing much but there were lasers and fireworks and of course Jarre’s ‘Oxygene-Equimoxe’ sonic catchphrases. I remember not caring much for Jarre’s music, I have laways found it a bit boring and cheesy, but it was all about spectacle and beating records of the largest attendance at an outdoor concert…

At the time, I didn’t realize he was such a pioneer, 35 years before the large EDM festivals, he was already doing something similar minus the MDMA… and talking about time machine, Jarre has announced his new release entitled ‘Electronica 1: The Time Machine’, and what is remarkable about it is the impressive number of artists involved… a ton of people, who are or have been involved with electronica and beyond, are participating: M83, Pete Townshend, Massive Attack’s 3D, Laurie Anderson, Vince Clarke (Erasure/Depeche Mode/Yazoo), Moby, Air, Little Boots, Tangerine Dream, Fuck Buttons, Gesaffelstein, director/composer John Carpenter, Boys Noize, Armin van Buuren, and Lang Lang. And this is just for the first part, as there will be an Electronica 2 set to be released during spring 2016.

This is how Jarre explains the new project:

‘I’ve wanted to tell a story for a while regarding electronic music history and its legacy from my point of view and experience, from when I started to nowadays. So I planned to compose for and collaborate with an array of artists who are, directly or indirectly linked to this scene, with people I admire for their singular contribution to our genre, that represent a source of inspiration for me over the last four decades I have been making music, but who also have an instantly recognizable sound. At the outset, I had no idea how this project would evolve, but I was delighted that everybody I reached out to accepted my invitation.’

This time Jarre wants to beat another record, the record of the most people participating in an album.
