I like horns, at least a certain use of them, like the bright ones in Rilo Kiley’s ‘Plane Crash in C’, or in several Bright Eyes’ songs, they are simply not used enough in current music.
This new indie band from Chicago, Ivy Dye, sent me a link for the demo version of their song ‘Statue’ which starts with blazing trumpets, and it immediately made me think about this kind of atmosphere as it manages to reconcile melancholy with an uplifting melody, a rare combination. The song takes another turn when guitars, bass and drums take off over nonchalant vocals singing ‘I make it through another day’, but it wakes up again when the trumpets are back in action.
Just listen, it’s a very catchy tune, which may remind you a little Bright Eyes – but I bet Iman is going to totally contradict me on this one!
Ivy Dye is currently recording a debut EP, which should be released this summer.
