Recently I saw two young female rockers doing the same disturbing thing, admiring Courtney Love. Natalie Denise Sperl, of the band Kill my Coquette, a rebellious frontgirl who knows how to rock, posted a few pictures of Courtney Love on her Facebook wall, with many marks of affection and respect, while Kitten’s wild frontgirl Chloe Chaidez posted this proud picture of herself with the Hole singer, visibly excited to meet her… well her band even opened for Courtney Love a few days ago.
Denise and Chloe are two ferocious young women, they both have an extraordinary presence on stage, bold and fearless, but do they really need to admire someone like Love to show they are badass? Is it now cool to have love for Love? Love is a lot of thing but a role model she isn’t! For me, admiring Love for her audacity is much worst than admiring Beyonce for her feminism, and it’s wrong. Don’t these young women know about the awful stories around Courtney Love? And I am not even talking about the speculations that she may have been involved in her husband’s death, not at all, I am talking about everything else, the punch in the face she sent to Kathleen Hanna, her narcissistic personality, her numerous and well documented lies and train wreck behavior – she even accused Dave Grohl to hit on her daughter for god’s sake! – her loudness, and not in a good way…. She is an awful character, whenever you like her music or not! She is violent and dangerous (ask Mary Lou Lord)… in a few words, did these girls read Kim Gordon’s book?
Kim describes Courtney as a ‘sociopath, someone to avoid’, ‘the kind of person who spent a lot of time growing up staring in the mirror practicing their look for the camera.’ And this is true, at the top of everything, Love is a poseur and a constant attention-demanding person, she is exhausting but she wins for these young women because she is the loudest? It’s not because she is obnoxious that she is bold and brave, it’s not because she refuses to play the rules that she is this rebel punk. Love has always being interested by herself, only by herself and it’s sad that these girls can’t make the difference between a real feminist and a vulgar attention whore! But Courtney is opening for Lana Del Rey these days, isn’t it a bit humiliating? she is not even dangerous anymore…
