Iman reviewed Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning' back in 2009. I completely agree with him in everything he wrote.
He said that it was the best album of the decade, and that couldn't be more true. In fact, it's the greatest album of all time. It was recorded in Lincoln, Nebraska (which I was unaware of), and was part of a double release. I agree with the fact that it's a damaged album- it really shows Conor's scars, and also the scars left by the 9/11 attack.
I think it was just my naivety, but I was unaware that the tunes were direct allusions to Oberst's drugging. I knew that "Lua" was definitely about self-medicating, but now with that fact in mind, and listening to the record, you can tell what he means when he mentions "these bars are filled with things that kill; by now you probably should've known".
I completely identify with Iman when he says "I don't know what to do with the memory". The entire album kind of feels like that. It takes a while to sink in, a few times reading the lyrics, and quite a bit of time analyzing to know what to do with the memory. It's just such a gorgeous record and it's mind-blowing.
How interesting the Conor's words can have such an impact on such diverse ages. I was only 7 when this album came out. The emotions put forth are amazing and powerful.
Lastly, the one thing that I agree with the most is the fact that Conor's "Goddamn make me cry" line makes me cry, too.
