I don’t want to do that, I simply can’t! Why do we need to do this each year? Why classifying, doing the best of, it’s so redundant anyway when you look at all these lists from Spin, Rolling Stone, Pitchfork,.. you end up finding the same names as if there were some kind of consensus on who is the best, what is the most creative music or artist.
Everyone should just appreciate music according to his or her personal taste, and not buy this album because it is #1 on Rolling Stone list, or NME top 20.
Music should not be ranked anyway, it’s not a competition, it completely goes against what art is for me. I’m tired of ranking, I’m tired of competition, and I rarely end up liking the winners to start with.
Although the distinction may greatly vary according to everyone’s personal taste, I would agree to say there is bad and good music, like there is bad and good literature. But when you consider that some music is good, how do you compare it to another good one? I want to say that ranking is impossible in this case.
That’s probably one of the differences between art and science, in science, there is progress, we improve theories, make others archaic and obsolete…in art, it is irrelevant, there is no progress, there are novelties that can please us or not, but the whole thing becomes so diverse that comparisons between the genres are ridiculous.
In science we rank all the time, this method is more efficient than this one, but in art? There are so many ways to express the same thing artistically, to achieve the same goal that ranking becomes absurd. It only corresponds to someone’s personal taste, personal view of the world, so what’s the point, ranking only for oneself?
That’s why I will not do any top 10 or 20 lists of the year!
