Hear Satellite Sky’s New Song ‘Next Time’

Satellite Sky

I hear more and more about Aussie bands settling down in Los Angeles, and this is quite an interesting migration, especially when they bring that much fury and energy in their music. Satellite Sky is a new Australian duo featuring Pete Kicks and Kim Kicks and what more do you want to know when they already have this last name? Yes, they kick ass on vocals, guitar and drums, yes, they are brother and sister and yes, the girl is on drums just like another famous rock duo who were just faking their siblingness.

So is Satellite Sky another garage rock band with hard-hitting guitars, thunderous drums and furious vocals? Sure, but there is much more than this in their new song, ‘Next Time’, off their forthcoming EP ‘Magnetize’ due out on May 5th. During the just-less-than 3-minute song, you can hear much more than the White Stripes, as they can evoke tons of classic British influences, from T. Rex to Bowie and even Depeche Mode,… wouldn’t you swear you hear Dave Gahan for a few seconds during that bridge singing ‘I’m afraid of you no more, so you gonna see me next time’? The song punches you in the stomach with a big sound and an adrenaline-shot energy, gives a very modern twist to an old formula, which brought them comparisons to bands such as The Kills, Band of Skulls, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Kooks.

‘One of our main objectives going into this recording was to capture the raucous energy of our live shows and transport that into the studio,’ declared the band to Pure Volume. ‘We definitely feel this was achieved on ‘Next Time’. This song has a defiant, uncompromising determination. It conveys a belief of embracing the opportunity to take a different path and push against what is expected, regardless of what obstacles may present themselves…. It’s also good ol’ fashioned foot stompin’ fun!’

An interesting aspect of their story is also Pete’s background in Astrophysics and Astronomy which is obviously where their moniker comes from. ‘The beautiful thing about delving into topics such as Astrophysics and Astronomy is that they really allow you to gain perspective on where you sit in the universe. Naming the band Satellite Sky just seemed to fit perfectly,’ writes Pete on the band’s bio on Facebook. Also, be prepared, if their recording sound is that loud, their live shows have to be very wild and raucous,… as a matter of fact, punk icon Henry Rollins has already noticed the duo and premiered one of their previous songs on his KCRW show. To sum up everything, I can only recommend a band which quotes Stephen Hawking (‘Look up at the stars and not down at your feet’) on their Facebook… Just look out for this Satellite coming in your sky soon.
