So what do I know about my buddy Mike Long? He is a funny guy from Colorado, trades in alt country and snapshots of the Cosa Nostra. His taste coincides with mine maybe one in three but he is much less pop and much more hipster. Of the five songs here, I love two, don’t love one, and have never heard of two before… so let’s see how high the rocky mountain high can go…
Cockeyed Rabbit Wrapped in Plastic – Slug – New to me but since this is their first song ever released I may be forgiven. It sounds like Sparks, the vocals this warped Russel Mael thingy, the beat is steady rock and roll but the insides seem to have been attacked by a jazz spatula – B+
Tis A Pity She Was a Whore -David Bowie (Official) – One of my faves of 2014. The entire Nothing Has Changed retro is spectacular and as long as Bowie isn’t gonna sell any copies, he might as well do what he wants with this marshalling dance force. Oddly enough he didn’t put this o the retro but it is well worth searching out – A-
Susie Thumb – Ty Segall – I really think I am ready to give up on this guy, it sounds like 60s guitar rockers, like Spencer Davis without the keyboards. Two and a half minutes and still time for a nifty solo… and how bad is Spencer Davis without the keyboards?(ps? the other song with Sue sucks) – B
Fire on the Mountain – Wand – Pals with Ty, these guys take psychedelic drugs and get laurel canyon high. All these guys seem to be waiting for their old ladies to do their washing – B
Avant Gardener – Courtney Barnett – “It’s a Monday, it’s so mundane…” I like her, she sounds like she lives with her junkie ex while she tries to put her life back together. In a good way – A
