With my frequent visits to Vacation Vinyl, I may now know more about underground Metal than your average Los Angeles music lover.
This time it was a little more complicated: Vacation Vinyl had a release party for Black Metal band Lord Foul’s LP, ‘Killing Raping Burning / The Devil's Advocate’ (what a program!), and after the loud blasphemous music stopped blasting inside the place, there was an in-store performance by Harrassor, the current band of Lord Foul’s only member, ‘Roach’.
How to describe Harrassor’s sound? It is black-doom metal, trashed by vocals screamed with the most terrifying raucous-braying voice I have heard, as if the singer was possessed by the devil or experiencing the most atrocious pain. Yeah, it is mostly the vocals I noticed at first, with a combination of loud metal guitar and drums, and but one song ventured into some hardcore stuff, without changing the dark tone a bit.
Pete Majors, who is also Vacation Vinyl’s buyer, manager and secret weapon, as I read it somewhere, was on vocals and he was wearing this scary spiked black leather cuff on his left arm, making him even more ferocious. In a bigger setting, I bet these guys start some dangerous mosh pits,… however, between songs at ground zero, they sounded like the nicest guys in the world.
