A very Happy Birthday to rock nyc Editor and Joe Strummer fanatic, Helen Bach, for whom every day is November 8th or at least it should be!
For Helen's big day I went off in search of birthday songs and gave up 13 reviews in because, really, how many times can you listen in bafflement to a Techno band named Ada from the 1990s without wondering why, Lord, what have U done t displease you.
I am not suce a big fan of Birthday songs, from Fitty to the Beatles to Altered Images to Ryan Adams to Bright Eyes, they all seem a little needy. Fitty is a snotty put down, the Beatles an extended dirty joke, Conor a manic breakdown, so on and so…
And, indeed there are quite a few musicians who have chosen to celebrate the anniversary. Uriah Heep perform some overeager prog-rock (in the magic garden..), Sufjan Stevens takes the opportunity to put us all to sleep, NOFX sound like NOFX and the Chipmunks sound like valium addicts on helium.
Modeslektor add Thom Yorke to a birthday remix, r.kelly figure it is as good a reason to get laid as any, Neil Sedaka is a child molester (but probably the best song here!), Lee Perry uses his mystic powers, and Cracker provide a killer track off their best album.
And that just scratches the surface.
But, unfortunately, Strummer never gave us a holiday song so Helen will have to make do
