Green Day's secret show at the Tiki Bar on Thursday August 11th

On Tuesday, Green Day announced they would play a 'secret show' on Thursday at the Tiki Bar in Costa Mesa, a tiny place with a 250-people capacity, where the tickets would supposedly be sold at the door at 8 pm. Needless to say, I did not try to go, as I did not want to go through hours of waiting behind lines of die-hard fans who had probably spent the night outdoors.

The OC Weekly has an article about it, but the no-picture-no-phone policy (how did they manage that?) seemed to have worked pretty well as no photo of the show has surfaced yet,… there is just this one-minute-long video on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05lRIxpP-VQ) that I would not even bother watching, as it must have been filmed from the inside of a pocket or a bra.

So Green Day played at 10 pm on the tiny stage, and started the set with a brand new song ‘Nuclear Family’, that they played twice with, the second time, some ‘instruction: Dance’,… WTF??

Still according to the OC Weekly, Billie Joe Armstrong said that the night would be ’new shit only’, and that ‘To reminisce is to die’.

So there was a lot of ‘new shit’ during the 90-minute show, and if you look at the set list, it was quite long with an encore during which Billie Joe came back alone with his electric guitar to play ‘Amy’, before the return of the band for the rest of the encore.

By the way, it was a benefit show, and all proceeds will go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
