Glee: Kidz Bop? by Mary Magpie

I specifically remember last year’s American Idol season finale in which a commercial for a new television show caught my attention. Glee? It looked cool, but I doubted I would remember to watch it, no big deal. Boy was I wrong. The first episode had me hooked. As a passionate singer, it touched me. As an actress, it caused me to laugh and feel as if I could relate to these characters. There is someone of every ethnicity, home life, gender, situation, and orientation in this show. Each character has his or her own personality and life that makes them stand out from the rest-and their voices. Each is unique, but they form together to create one beautiful, harmonious sound. This is why I recently purchased the soundtrack-as the season comes to an end tomorrow, the excitement I get from Glee can carry on inside my little singing heart. To my mom, who thinks it’s like Kidz Bop only for older kids, it’s a terrible show but shes forced to watch it with me each week. To her Kidz Bop statement, I responded with, when rock stars redo cover songs is it “Rock Star Bop”?.

There are a few songs on this album that really stand out to me. The one that does the most is “Dancing With Myself”. By the character Artie, who is in a wheelchair, it’s a song that I sing into a hairbrush. Extremely catchy, his voice is addictive. So incredibly smooth and flawless, it’s no surprise that he is my favorite character.

“Defying Gravity”, done as a duet between Rachel and Kurt, is stunning. Perfect voices in harmony cause me to have this on repeat. By far the best duet on the album.

“Keep Holding On”, by the whole cast, is beautiful. This song has always meant a lot to me, and hearing these extremely talented singers make it a group piece has caused it to mean even more to me.

The last song in my top four is Don’t Stop Believin’. A group song, it is wonderfully done. Some previous to this cast have done this song and been mediocre, some stunning. I don’t believe there is a word in my 8th grade vocabulary for the incredibility of this song. The closest I can probably get is flawless.

Being this excited about the album, I’ve spent today running around the halls spreading the word of how I have the soundtrack. I came across people who absolutely hated the show. Terrible acting, lip syncing, and situations? I’m not sure if that’s what the average watcher sees, but as a “theater kid”, it is me. Dealing with these issues in such a public way is something applaudable. Quite bold and no smoke and mirrors, I am sometimes shocked by the audacity of the show, but in a good way of course. I sometimes wish that Glee was not a television show, but real life. To some extent it is, but not all together. I’m going to ask my choir teacher to make our choral group a Glee Club and start a petition. Let’s see how this goes…
